Rhys is 3 weeks old today

I walked in this morning to see both Rhys' eyes open! What a surprise. He is still holding his stats without his paralytic, and they started feeding him milk today. This is great because he will get the antibodies from the milk and hopefully get some good calories so he can grow. They are starting with 2cc per feeding and he's getting it four times today. Hopefully he will be able to tolerate it. Little man is still fighting the oscillator and they keep cranking up his settings. They are higher than I've ever seen them and that is very bothersome. I really don't like the results of the new doctor's decisions, but I have been told that he is one of the best.

I think he decided to open his eyes so he could give his new doctor the 'stink eye'!!!

I am so glad I was able to spend a little time today with you and Rhys. I wish I could have stayed all day! It was good for my heart to see him so strong and opening those tiny eyelids. I also know he is aware of your presence and you are doing just what he needs right now. It still amazes me how strong you and Cody have been throughout this journey. I know you do what you have to, but it is certain that Rhys' strength is genetic. I sure am proud of you all! I hate that we are so far from you and can't visit more often, but Mark and I will try to come visit you guys on a weekend very soon.

Ha - Little Rhys wanted to see what all the fuss is about. I hope he tolerates his milk and gets fat and sassy... Tell him his Aunt Myra loves him.

I have to tell you that if you question (or have questions about) the new doctors decisions you need to ask him...I trust that he is making case-appropirate decisions for Rhys, but he still needs to communicate clearly not just what he's doing but why - to you, and if you don't agree with it you should tell him - maybe he would go into more detail. Sorry - that's the nurse in me creeping out...now the friend in me says that I am SOOOO EXCITED Rhys opened his eyes!! It's like he's saying "hello world" - or more importantly "hello Mommy and Daddy"!

Sweet Candice,

You look beautiful holding you little baby boy! and he looks so at peace on you! Thankyou for sharing those sweet pictures with all of us that are praying for you. I can hear the weariness in your blog tonight and so I am praying for your strength again. You are truly and amazing woman and you have been chosen to be this little man's mommy! You are doing an amazing job - rest when you can but your strength will come from the Lord!

I can't imagine what you are going through right now. I remember the parts of my son's life that seem similar to where Rhys is today. If I can ever help with name of doctors or nurses that I love and trust, similarities in our sons and their NICU stories, hope for you in how Kyle is now, anything at all. I do remember the prognosis that Kyle was given after his brain bleed. I couldn't find any air in the room to breath. I truly hurt for where you are right now. I do want to encourage you in this truth - God has given Rhys to YOU. YOU are his mom. NO ONE knows him better than you do. You may not know all the medical info but YOU know Rhys. any concerns you have - voice them! You spend more time each day staring at that little man then they do all week put together. If he looks different - you would know! It is hard to speak up b/c we fear that the doctors know more and they do about the medical side - but you know your son! Have courage in this - the doctors and nurses see how much you love him - I can see it so clearly in the pictures on your site - they will listen to your thoughts! I am here to do anything I can to help. until then I will pray for you and baby Rhys.

Rhys was probably tired of hearing on the racket and not knowing what all the fuss was about, so he decided to check it out for himself! I'm so glad he opened his eyes.

Just keep in mind some doctors have a better bedside manner than others. Stay strong and focus on the positive! Love you guys and I'm here if you need anything!
