swim lessons

Cody and I decided to enroll Rhys in swim lessons, and today was our first day. Other than me twisting my knee, busting my butt and nearly dropping Rhys we did okay! Actually, Rhys did great for being in a pool for the first time. He was a little shaken initially from me falling with him, but once we got into the pool he was really enjoying himself. I explained his developmental delays to his instructor and she didn't miss a beat. I don't necessarily expect Rhys to learn to swim, though if he did that'd be great, but I do think it'll be a great experience for him. I have to keep reminding myself that Rhys has every right to the same opportunities as other kids and that it's okay he isn't developmentally where he should be. It is really difficult taking the kids places by myself. In situations like this it is hard even with just Rhys because he has to constantly be held - he can't sit or stand. Since it is hard to lug around my 25 pounder my initial reaction is to want to stay at the house because it's easier, but Rhys and Zoe both need to get out and about more so I need to suck it up! So, we are now enrolled in weekly swim lessons. Rhys wasn't crazy about going under water, but he didn't have a meltdown like I thought he might. He even went to far as to start slapping the water and participating in the songs. He swallows the water instead of keeping his mouth closed, but I'll cut him some slack since it was his first session. :) There are three other little girls in his class that he watched so I'm hoping this will give him a little social interaction too.

Ah, my butt is fine, it's my knee that doesn't like me right now. :)

Good on you, Mama! What a fun opportunity for Rhys. Sounds so challenging, but great fun for your sweet little (big?) peanut. :)
